The "Crockery Smash" was just one of the vast array of effects provided on the organ for accompanying silent films. When activited, the arm dropped, causing the chain and the attached pieces of metal to "smash" onto the larger metal plate. A "tinkling" effect was heard as the arm returned to the upright position. According to one story, staff in the empty auditorium looked upwards in horror, thinking a chandelier had fallen down - but it was only Quentin Maclean trying out the newly-installed Crockery Smash! Sadly, this effect does not appear on any recordings of the organ. For the stop list and other details, click here.
