| In 1868, an organ was built by August Gern for the newly opened Church of Notre Dame de France (the French Catholic Church is of circular design and was built in 1793 as a panorama to house very large paintings for public viewing). There were two manuals and 24 stops, and the instrument was Gern's first after leaving the employ of Cavaille-Coll. In 1938, it was rebuilt and enlarged to three manuals by J. W. Walker & Sons who revoiced the reeds. During World War II, the building was bombed and subsequently the instrument was removed and stored by Walker's who, in 1955, built an organ incorporating only a few of the Gern ranks (marked with an asterisk). In 1986-7 the organ was overhauled, tonally reconstructed, and enlarged by B. C. Shepherd & Son of Edgware. The console was refitted with stop knobs, replacing the horseshoe stop-key layout. The original Gern stops were identified and other second-hand French stops were added, including some by Cavaille-Coll. Other stops were replaced by better second-hand ranks, and tonal additions were made, including the 32-foot stops and the Chamade reed. Most reed ranks were revoiced in the French style by Keith Bance, who also assisted with action work. The sanctuary was reordered in 2003, and the building was redecorated in 2004, when the upper front pipes were repainted. | |||
