The console was, understandably, a bewildering sight. However, at its basic level, the instrument was, actually, quite straightforward to comprehend, i.e. the Accompaniment and Great manuals had stops from chamber 'A' only, while the Orchestral had stops purely from chamber 'B'. Only the Solo and Pedal had stops from both chambers. In other words, the Great and Orchestral organs were self-contained, while the top manual possessed stops for soloing against 'A' or 'B' accompaniments and, likewise, the Pedal provided suitable basses for either 'A' or 'B'. Simple!
In some respects, the scheme was quite extravagant, with 13 ranks having 16-foot octaves. All of these, except the Trumpet and Tuba Sonora were available on the Pedal organ (the trumpet's lowest octave was borrowed from the Oboe Horn - which was playable from the Pedal via the "Bassoon" stop - and the 16-foot tuba was, originally, to go to Tenor C only, so provision had not been made for it on the Pedal). Other extravagances included a handful of stops that were not extended, being available at only one pitch, and half-a-dozen stops that were not duplexed, i.e. playable from one manual only. Additionally, there were the pedal-only stops, the Ophicleide and Diaphone Horn. There has been some debate about whether these two stops should be considered legitimately as "units" or "ranks", since each one contained only 12 pipes. However, there were other stops that also had incomplete compasses with borrowed basses, it's just that the Ophicleide and Diaphone Horn had borrowed trebles - as did the top octave of the 4-foot Vox Humana (which was from the Tibia Clausa). The 16-foot octave of the Tibia Minor in chamber 'B' was borrowed from the Gedeckt in chamber 'A' and, even more curiously, the Fanfare Trumpet's 16-foot octave (playable from the Solo, where it was called "Trombone") was from the Tibia Clausa!

The pipe numbers listed above are taken from Hill, Norman & Beard's "Action Chart" and "Extension Chart". On the basis of these documents, the total number of pipes would have been 2,514. Precise details of the Flute Mixture (Accompaniment), Brilliant Mixture (Great) and Echo Mixture (Orchestral) are unknown. Officially, they were derived from the Gedeckt, Open Diapason, and Salicional, respectively. However, it is known that ranks other than these were also included in the compositions of some mixtures.
