| Originally built by Vowles of Bristol for a Wesleyan Methodist Church in Pontypool. It was installed there in 1884 at a cost of £435. The church closed in 1958 and the organ was transferred to St Matthew's in 1960. According to the minutes of the Church committee, "the John Compton Organ Co. had estimated alterations at £2000 and in addition there would be a further sum, not yet known, for alterations in accordance with the wishes of the Diocesan Organ Advisor." There are no details about the alterations but it almost certainly included electrifying the action. The cost of removal, renovation, and installation was £2,918. In 1998, Matthew Copley of Organ Design added some new stops (marked with asterisks) and revoiced the organ, without altering the wind pressure (23/4"). | ||
