John Silverton was born in 1955 on Long Island, New York State, and educated in England.

He studied at Trinity College of Music in London under Dr Harry Gabb (organ) and David Newbould (composition). He also studied with Christopher Robinson at St George's Chapel, Windsor. In 1977 he moved to Lincoln Cathedral as Organ Scholar, where his studies continued under the direction of Cathedral Organist Dr Philip Marshall.

In 1991 he entered the Music Department at Sheffield University, proceeding to his B Mus in 1994 - specialising in Organ Performance, Composition, and Advanced Keyboard Harmony. He has been the Organist at Tapton Hill Church since 1992.
